About

Meagan Watson is a painter, based in Savannah, GA. Being the only artist in the family of medicine, choosing this path was daunting. Since a young age, showing in local galleries in both Texas and Savannah, have played an important role in her art world. She takes inspiration from personal experiences and the spirit of nature to influence her paintings. Through the journey of painting both figuratively and abstractly, she has found a method of art-making in the lens of exposure, while working on her intuitive personal journey. She has taken interest in exploring the realm of conceptualism and the process of abstract art making. This has allowed her to uncover the artist's process, while developing a system in her work that pursues meaning personal to her story.

Currently studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design, she plans on getting more education in the future. She wants to pursue art full time, and continue showing around in galleries around the US and internationally.

Artist Statement

My work explores the realm of conceptualism, and the concept of following your intuition. In the creation of the painting, I have shifted my focus from the final product of the painting, to the process of creating the final piece. In some spiritual practices, as well as getting to know oneself, it takes listening to your body, and trusting it to pursue its place.

I begin choosing imagery from past work, to make my stencil material. After, my colors are chosen by random, and I begin staining the fabric of the canvas. Then each stencil is placed one at a time, layered by reacting to each placement. When working, I lay the paintings on the ground and work around them, flipping them and moving them. I want work that doesn’t stand still when looking at it. The objective is for the viewer to be able to move around the piece, just as it was made. I want to be in the moment and experience painting as an extension of myself. I’m part of the process, which makes me more in touch with my work.
